Square Enix and Amazon have teamed up for a cross-platform promotion to create hype for the next chapter of Final Fantasy XIV, the companies announced today.
Amazon.com users who purchase a video game item worth $19.99 or more between now and May 5 will be sent a redemption code for three pieces of downloadable content for Final Fantasy XIV. Among the content available for redemption is a pretty cool looking cloud that gamers can use to fly their avatar around the in-game world.
On the downside, however, the promotion feels like another cheap trick by the industry to promote retail loyalty. We’ve seen this done in the past with pre-order bonuses exclusive to specific retailers, and it’s kind of frustrating.
It creates a divide between the gamer and the game, as one must sacrifice convenience for content, and it’s really unfortunate to see the trend is constantly going. There is a light at the end of the tunnel with Final Fantasy XIV, as Square Enix is pretty good at limiting exclusive content to a time limit.
With most cosmetic content in Final Fantasy XIV, Square typically waits a month or two before releasing the content to the general public on their Mog Station store.
But with the Amazon.com content, there’s not telling when that happen. At the time of writing, there’s no information as to when non-US customers might get their hands on this deal, but we’ll update as more information becomes available.
